Adolescent Program

"The family system is the focal point in the recovery process for any child's eating disorder. Our program has been designed with this in mind and our goal is to empower the family to aid their child in achieving a full recovery."
Mark Gibson
ACSW

Our medically supervised Intensive Outpatient Adolescent Program is designed to serve young people suffering from anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder. It is family focused program, meaning we treat the adolescent's eating disorder with significant family involvement. Our supportive and caring environment ensures client comfort and privacy while in treatment.

The program consists of three evenings of structured treatment per week. Specific services include:

  • Individual Psychotherapy
  • Family Psychotherapy
  • Supervised Meals
  • Experiential Groups
  • Process Groups
  • Nutrition Counseling

In addition to these services, our program includes weekly treatment reviews, and medical and psychiatric management.

This family-intensive program focuses on the unique treatment needs of adolescents. Research has shown that family-based treatments that empower parents in the refeeding process are the most effective in helping a child with anorexia gain weight and improve eating habits and mood. For those children struggling with bulimia, the focus on family increases awareness as well as empowers parents to support their child in utilizing healthier coping mechanisms and improve eating habits.

In order to meet these goals, Summit makes the family work the centerpiece of the treatment focus. Families meet with a therapist on a weekly basis; family meals are implemented to empower parents during the refeeding process; weekly sessions with a Registered Dietician; and a weekly family support group.
