Binge Eating Disorder


Binge eating disorder is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating. It is distinguished from bulimia nervosa because individuals suffering from binge eating disorder will not take compensatory measures, such as vomiting or engaging in excessive exercise, following a binge. Characteristics of binge eating disorder include:
  • Recurrent episodes of binge eating
  • No compensatory behavior following binges
  • Associated with 3 or more of the following:
    • Rapid eating
    • Eating large amounts of food when not hungry
    • Eating until uncomfortably full
    • Guilt after overeating
