Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia nervosa is a serious eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of bingeing and purging. Unlike anorexia nervosa, individuals with bulimia nervosa may maintain a normal weight. Some of the characteristics of bulimia nervosa include:
- Recurrent episodes of binge eating
- Compensatory behavior to prevent weight gain: vomiting, laxative or diuretic abuse, excessive exercising, fasting
- Minimum of 2 binge and purge episodes per week
- Intense concern with body shape and weight
- Average age of onset is between 14 and 16 years old
- Personality traits may include difficulty with change and/or conflict
